Wake County Aging Plan

Strategies
    Consumer Protection
  1. Educate the public as a whole about how to detect and prevent consumer fraud.
  2. Support the Senior Consumer Fraud Task Force and enhance the existing
    information and referral system.
  3. Encourage consumer use of existing legal aid resources, including legal services and
    education.
  4. Encourage financial institutions to be more watchful over, and protective of, seniors’
    bank accounts.

    Safety at Home
  1. Work with churches and existing neighborhood groups to enhance community watch
    or “buddy system” programs.
  2. Support volunteer programs that help reduce senior isolation.
  3. Provide a source of funding for personal emergency response systems to allow low-
income seniors to call for help.

    Disaster Preparedness
  1. Identify and “register” senior and disabled adults who may need help during disasters.
  2. Assure that there are adequate numbers of trained volunteers to assist these
    individuals.
  3. Assure that a special needs shelter (s) is identified and activated as needed during
    disasters or other emergency situations.
  4. Design and seek funding for a “safety kit” that would help senior and disabled adults
who remain at home during a disaster or other emergency.
